Plumbing help for Milwaukee’s older houses, from lead lines to frozen pipes

One call reaches a licensed local plumbing company for leaks, clogs, water heaters and backups. Ask about lead pipes before anyone digs.

Most Milwaukee houses were plumbed before 1950. That means lead or galvanised supply pipe in a lot of basements, clay and cast iron drains under the floor, and water lines that freeze when January sits below zero for a week.

What plumbing work costs in Milwaukee

Local companies commonly charge a trip or diagnostic fee and then quote the job. A simple fixture repair often lands in the low hundreds; clearing a main line usually costs more than a sink, and a tank water heater replacement is commonly quoted somewhere around $1,500 to $3,900 installed.

What moves a Milwaukee plumbing quote up or down.

If your house has a lead water line

Milwaukee Water Works plans to replace about 65,000 lead service lines by 2037, and its 2026 programme targets roughly 3,800 of them, mostly in prioritised North Side and South Side neighbourhoods. For homes with one to four units and no commercial use, the city has charged owners nothing for a required replacement since the start of 2024. That depends on federal money, and the city has said a cost share would return without it.

What a private plumber does around a lead line is different from what the city programme does. The city hires the contractor for its replacement work and asks you to sign a consent form. A local plumbing company is who you call for what happens inside the house: checking whether the pipe at your meter is lead, replacing old galvanised or lead pipe after the meter, and fixing anything the new line disturbs. Before anyone quotes you for the service line itself, ask Milwaukee Water Works whether your address is in a programme and what it would cost you through the city.

Not sure what is in your basement? Call and describe the pipe at the meter, or send a photo after the call.

Winter decides a lot of the work

Search demand for an emergency plumber in Milwaukee runs about six times higher in January than in May or June, and the reason is cold. Pipes on outside walls, over crawlspaces and near the water meter freeze when temperatures stay below zero, and a frozen meter can crack and leak once it thaws. Property owners are responsible for protecting both the pipes and the meter. Know where your main shutoff is before the first cold snap, because the first ten minutes after a pipe splits are the ones that decide how much of the basement gets wet.

If a pipe has burst, close the main valve first, then call.

Basements, rain and the sewer

Heavy summer storms send a different kind of call. Water comes up through a floor drain, or a backup appears in the laundry tub, because the sewer lateral from the house is cracked, full of roots, or carrying storm water it should not. Near downtown and in Shorewood, a single combined pipe carries both sewage and rain. Elsewhere the sewers are separate, but leaks and downspouts tied into the lateral can overload them all the same. A plumbing company can camera the line, clear it, and tell you whether a backwater valve makes sense for your house.

Common questions

What does it cost to call?

Nothing. There is no charge for the call or the introduction, and no obligation afterwards. You pay the plumbing company directly for any work, at whatever you agree with them.

What does a plumber cost in Milwaukee?

It depends far more on the job than the hour. Most local companies charge a trip or diagnostic fee, then quote. Small repairs often land in the low hundreds; main line clearing costs more, and a tank water heater is commonly quoted around $1,500 to $3,900 installed. The cost guide goes through what moves the number.

Does the city really replace lead service lines for free?

For required replacements at 1–4 unit homes with no commercial use, Milwaukee has charged owners nothing since early 2024, funded largely by federal money. Owners who ask to jump the queue through the Owner Request Program pay for the private side, which the city puts at about $3,454 in 2026. Check your own address with Milwaukee Water Works, because terms can change.

Can someone come out tonight?

Sometimes. The plumbing company you are put in touch with sets its own hours and response times, and we will not promise one we do not control. If water is coming in, shut the main valve first and say it is an emergency when you call.

Do you cover Wauwatosa and West Allis?

Yes, along with Bay View, Riverwest and the rest of Milwaukee. West Allis has its own water utility and its own lead line rules, so mention which side of the line you are on.

I own a duplex. Is that different?

Often. Two units commonly share one water service, one meter and one sewer lateral, so a problem in the lower unit can start in the upper. Milwaukee also only lets an owner-occupant pull their own plumbing permit in a one-family building, so duplex work goes through a licensed plumber.

Are you a plumbing company?

No. We are an advertising and referral service. When you call or send a request, we connect you with an independent, licensed local plumbing company that serves your area. We do not do plumbing work, hold a plumbing licence, or take a cut of what you pay.
